Have any of you ever been on the island and seen a large shadow, but you thought it was a sea bass so you didn't try to catch it? If so, look no further! Here I have made a handy guide for all of you :3

Sea bass shadow: Shorter and fatter than other fish
Napoleon fish: Longer and skinner
Moray eel: Short and fat
Swordfish: Long and skinny

River fish-

Black bass: Smaller and fatter, more like a barbel steed
Arapaima: Long and skinny
Dorado: Looks like a sea bass

Questions? Ask me!

I forgot to add, this is primarily for LARGE and HUGE shadow sizes. If you want help with smaller fish, ask me.

Why no pics?

My 3ds camera does not work anymore. I mean, I could take pics from my phone but they'd look really crappy. If I get a chance I'll post the pics.

Also, love the ruby signature.

tbh I just go with this mindset

fin: catch it
no fin: **** it

but aren't there plenty of other larger shadow fish?

Most of the large ocean fish that are worth catching have the same shadow, long, skinny, and generally bigger looking than a sea bass shadow. After catching many, many sea bass you will start to remember the shadows. These larger shadows include oarfish, napoleon fish, giant trevally, tuna, king salmon, and blue marlin.

If you are on the island, the largest fish without a fin is either a blue marlin or napoleonfish. Both of those are worth 10k. They are actually better bets than fins because ocean sunfish are only worth 4k and hammerheads are worth 8k.

I've always had this mindset whenever I go fish, like if I see a shadow that looks like a sea bass, I'll go, "Oh, that's a sea bass, f*** it," but then I always think, "But what if it's not, ehhh it probably is but I'm not sure, urgghh I'll just catch it in case it isn't", so I always end up catching every big fish shadow I find.

Saw Shark - 12k
Shark - 15k
Whale Shark - 13k

even with the poor Ocean Sunfish and subpar Hammerhead, I'd say this is far better. especially since the only way I'm doing island fishing is if I'm doing bug catching and it catches my eye

Ok a tad off topic for a sec but every time someone mentions Napoleon fish I remember my first daylight trip to the island and I was fishing out of boredom. I reeled one in and I didn't know they existed in Animal Crossing and my mind auto-flew to this image and I died laughing for like 10 minutes because IT'S SO FECKIN BLUE...

...back on topic.

I did notice minor differences, namely that the Sea Bass shadow IS noticeably tinier than the more worthwhile fish. Really noticeable in River fish. Their shadows look enormous. So I do have a vague idea of what you're talking about.

But I'm pmuch with everyone else here, tbh. I usually fish whenever I bug hunt so I'll only really go for fins and pray it's not one one of those pancake sharks or w/e the heck they're called. Hammerheads are still okay since they're worth the same as the more common bugs, with the exception of Goliath.

Aah I can try and take some screenshots of those shadows tomorrow to help out!! I will make sure to catch the fish after I screenshot their shadows to make sure they are what I think they are. :>

I think once you've caught enough sea basses you'll be able to tell when it's not a sea bass. I was able to catch a Blue Marlin just by knowing it's not a sea bass. Either that or I've completely lost my sanity from fishing in animal crossing. haha
