Update: Invertedpolkadots got it!!!
Stitches is finally moving. He's the last of my original 5 villagers, so he's led a full life in my village and I thought it would be great to give him away to someone who's wanted him for a long time. He's moving in 4 days, and I will hand him over to the winner in that time.
There's a twist, though. I don't want to do just an ordinary giveaway! I have here five questions that need some answering.
1. You have two children. Knowing that one of them is a girl, what is the probability that the other child is also a girl?
Answer: 1/3. The only thing we know for sure is that one of them is the girl -- we don't know which one of them it is. So we have three possible combinations: GB (first child girl, second child boy) BG and GG. The probability that both of them are girls is therefore one out of three.
2. You meet five people (let's call them A, B, C, D, and E) on the road. You know for sure that at least one of them is a liar.
A says: "C and D are definitely lying."
B mutters: "I'm not sure...but I think A or D are big fat liars."
C scoffs: "A is so full of it! He's the only liar here."
D sighs: "At least B and E are both telling the truth."
E smiles: "Everybody's a liar."
Who are the liars, and who are telling the truth?
Answer: We know for sure that E is a liar -- that makes C and D a liar as well. However, A and B's statements check out; C and D are both liars, while one of either A or E is lying as well.
3. 52 cards in a deck have been randomly thrown, face-down, on a flat surface. You are trying to pick up all cards one by one. What is the probability that you will pick up an ace of spades before the two of spades?
Answer: 50%! Whether or not the other cards exist is irrelevant to these two cards.
4. What is Stitches' default catchphrase? SET YOUR ANSWER COLOR TO WHITE.
Answer: This had been originally set to white; but if you looked closely at the numbering and the description of the puzzle, you'd know to look for this question c:
5. Jane will turn 18 years old in five days. On New Year's Eve last year, however, she was only 15. When is her birthday?
Answer: Any date from January 1 to January 5. c: Any date before or later than that would contradict the "New Year's Eve last year" bit.
Thank you very much to everyone who participated!
