Hello there! I didn't think that I would ever have to write something like this, but here goes.
I recently started up animal crossing new leaf a few weeks ago, after taking a long break. I created a now town, and I've been passively progressing and enjoying adding new additions in hopes of creating my dream town. This afternoon, I decided that I wanted to try hacking my 3ds console itself, not the animal crossing game. This was a bad idea, you'll see why later. I spent part of my afternoon going through the whole process, and everything went well.
I didn't want this. I was overwhelmed after hearing about all of the risks that are inevitable if you hack, and I wanted to undo all of these changes that I had just made. I frantically started searching for guides and videos on how to remove all CFW/hacked content. I was ready to revert back to what my 3ds was like before.
This is where the mistake happened. I read that all restricted/hacked content will be removed, but your non-hacked/legally purchased or downloaded content will remain in place. I didn't create a backup. I don't know why. I guess I was just super overwhelmed that it slipped my mind. This was the worst mistake that I could have made. I formatted my sd card, which basically clears it of all data/saved files. I quickly put my sd card back in my 3ds, just to realize that animal crossing wasn't there anymore. I lost all of my data, all of my memories that I had created in this short period of time.
I'm not overly upset though, as this was a good learning experience for a number of reasons. For one, I now know to create a backup of my town every once in a while, incase I make another stupid mistake (believe me, I will). I can start over, and experience the game differently. I was debating on wether to start over earlier in the day, as I wasn't happy with some of the decisions I made, like purchasing a large amount of bells with my TBT, allowing me to quickly progress, or relying too hard on the community. I can start over, and play the game in a way that I truly want to. Also, i've only been playing for two weeks, and I haven't been spending the whole day/ too much time on it, so I didn't lose much content. I have enjoyed the experience so far, and although I am upset that I lost all of these great memories, it is also providing new opportunities for me to try something new, and play the game differently.
In the future, i'm going to research and really deeply consider ever modifying my software, as making silly mistakes can be EXTREMELY impactful. I probably won't even try hacking at all on any device, as I don't want to take more risks.
I am going to start a new town, and play the game differently. This was deffinately a learning experience, and in a way, i'm glad that this happened.
Thank you for taking your time to read this, and I hope that you learned something or had a good laugh at these silly mistakes that I made!
