I have this 10min speech to give at church today. Im really nervous and I feel like I am going to make a fool of myself. I need some advice.

The board of the church and 100 other people are going to be there..

Advice?

Alright you're going to give a speech.
Well try not looking directly at your audience.
Take deep breaths and stay calm, just be casual.
Just pretend you're talking to a large group of friends.
All you have to do is read right? I mean eye contact is essential but if it makes you nervous at all, then don't use it.

look at the audience, but look "at" them, kinda look through them, like u own them so they dont think ur someone who stars down while saying a speech. and imagine them in their underwearLOL, if that helps.

(plus,if u look like the person in ur avatar, they'll just be drooling.)

The underwear thing just makes me want to laugh.. xD

There are some ugly people in this world. Do not picture people in their underwear. I think coffee summed it up pretty good. If you are just reading, the best thing you can do is not look directly at them and pretend you are talking to friends. Public speaking takes practice.

When I am giving speeches I just focus on what I am saying. When doing eye contact just pick an object in the background and look at it so you don't actually have to look at people. They will think that you are giving good eye contact when your not even directly looking at them ;-)

"Try not looking directly at your audience" is awful speech advice.

Being a speaker myself, I'll tell you that audience-eye-contact is essential. Both types of it, too. There's the "scan the crowd" type of eye contact, when you just pretty much look around at the audience, but not to anyone specific, then there's the "locking" type...where you do look at people specifically.

If you're trying to make this a good speech...use both types.

Avoid using words like "um", "uh", and "like".

Make sure you've got good posture. Don't lean over to one side, or stand in any other sort of way that might make them think you don't care. Body language is another essential part of speaking.

Other then that, make sure you're loud enough, and smile. : D

I agree with that.
But remember it's not as easy for some people as it might be for you.
I get really nervous when giving a speech in front of many people and forget to keep eye contact.

Gabs if you're good at the whole eye contact thing then use it.

Even if she isn't "good" at the whole eye contact thing, she should practice, and use it anyway.

Looking at the wall behind the audience, or something like that, is a BIG mistake. It's highly noticable, and it tells them that you're totally nervous about the whole thing. You don't want them thinking that.

The key here is practice. If she runs through the speech enough times at home, maybe even in front of a mirror, she'll do fine.

I can never do the underwear thing because then I just am rolling around on the stage laughing.

The trick is:
1. Look directly in the middle of the audience. Make it look like you could be looking at anyone.
2. Absorb yourself in your mind someplace like a nice meadow or with your friends, and read the paper at the same time.

Simple Solutions.
