it really is a futon, in the (original) Japanese sense of the term - a futon is traditional Japanese bedding. For whatever reason in America we turned it into a weird convertible couch thing.

Makes sense that it’s a translation issue. I love futons as a furniture item, so I’m used to the convertible couch term.
