There really does need to be a balance, I agree.
Animal Crossing being an escape or not, I don't think it's necessarily ideal to foster some sort of boring, bland universe where everyone always gets along, everyone is over-the-top nice to you and laughably easy to befriend, and has no variation of personality at all. It's boring. It just is. It's sad that they believe it was necessary to wash out all of the different personalities and I will always be frustrated with this, though I do not believe in the slightest that we will ever see an improvement in this regard. Nintendo would never "un-washout" personalities and make them suddenly mean when they were already nice, at least not in the same game... And when do you think we'll ever see another Animal Crossing iteration? Certainly not anytime soon. I see this one lasting a decade or so. (But that's just me, maybe that's not the case, idk, but with the updates it seems that this one is expected to be a quite permanent and long-lasting fixture).
It bores me though because I used to enjoy having to WORK on friendships and befriending cranky/snooty villagers and et cetera. Now I just have to talk to them every day, never do any favors for them, never have them in my house, etc etc ... They'll say the same things to me over and over and eventually I'll have talked to them enough for them to dole out their picture to me. Yay. I guess.
More emphasis is now placed on building up your island which is super fun and all, but I really enjoyed having to do work with trying to befriend my neighbors. There are no consequences for neglecting friendships besides a "where have you been?
" line and there is no struggle to climb up the ladder in regards to friendship levels rather than just a simple waiting game.
Even in fiction, a world without conflict is extraordinarily dull.
