Anyone know the full limitations/requirements on that?

Like, say I have three villager homes in one acre and I want to have a fourth in the acre next to it. However, the way I want this to work, one side of that villager's house is in the other acre; with the three houses already.

I tried to make a diagram :( But like, if the X's are the villagers home and the | lines are the acre border. Would that work if I already have three houses in the acre this house slips into?

The top left house is the one I'm unsure of! I'm trying to figure this out before I really start planning things to avoid frustration later :P

I'm pretty sure that it's the center square of the house that counts as the house, so I think you should be good!
