This concerns me.

Previously, the official smash bros tournament received a bit of attention. It had 10-25 participants and when the tournament initiated more than half of the people that had signed up didn't even bother to have their matches, which resulted in a lot of stress for the host and the winners of some battles, as the winners, nor the host had no idea of who was even participating/bothering to actually battle.

Since this isn't the "official" smash bros tournament on btb, I still think it's worth giving you a bit of advice on how the previous tournaments should have been held.

Look at the most recent official tournament and then pick out the members that had signed up, but didn't bother to turn up for their battles and ban them from participating in this tournament. Black list them. Because frankly, the previous tournament was so stressful and annoying for me (despite me winning it). Most of the time I had absolutely no clue as to who I was going to fight against, and when I did it was completely up to me to contact/heckle them into fighting me.

There has to be a some form of punishment for the people that sign up for things and then don't bother to turn up.

Don't discourage him from future tournaments! he showed up this time and played some awesome battles with me. I know it's really stressful when its an online tournament and people don't show up... It happens in house too sometimes. You've just gotta DQ em and keep going.
