Should I get NL? Worth it?

Hello, I’m pretty new to the AC community, my first game being ACNH. Recently, I’ve been wanting NL for my birthday, but I want to know if it’s worth it. Should I buy it? If so, any advice for a newbie? Thanks! 😊

I’d say to have a look at the trailers and gameplay videos. Personally, I struggle to play older games because the quality looks a lot lower and really pixelated compared to the newest game. If you don’t find that an issue though, I think you would really enjoy it.

New Leaf is definitely an amazing game, I really enjoyed it and played it right up until New Horizons came out. There are quite a lot of differences compared to new horizons too, so it’ll feel like a different gameplay experience.

For me it’s just down to the graphics, but if that doesn’t concern you then I say go for it!

For me graphics aren't the be all end all of if I'll play a game. I've played New Leaf for years, and there's a reason the community thinks it's a better game than New Horizons. It comes down to the villagers- they aren't as bland as they are in New Horizons. Certainly not as rude as in GameCube or Wild World, but they still had personality. Though, I do agree that watching some videos about it would give a good view of what the game's like.
Here's where I plug Chuggaaconroy's New Leaf let's play, which he did for base New Leaf and then came back to when the Welcome Amiibo update was released. Welcome Amiibo is basically the only version you can get these days- the game will update to that version if it's an earlier cartridge- but most of what he goes through in the base New Leaf is unchanged. The only differences come with MEOW Coupons, the campground, and amiibo functionality.

If you decide based on the above advice that you want the game, my advice for a new player coming from ACNH is this: If you're interested in building up your town and making it pretty, beware when choosing your map at the start that the shop and town hall cannot be moved! There are some other buildings you can add that are also unmovable after erecting them, but Isabelle warns you about that I believe.

Also, in this game, villagers will randomly move in wherever they want. If you're playing the Welcome Amiibo version of the game, the only thing that you can use to influence where new villagers move in is patterns on the ground. Villagers won't move in on top of patterns, so if you'd like someone in a specific spot, you can place patterns on the ground to eliminate options until they have to move in where u want :)

Thanks! I’ll keep these in mind when considering wether to buy it or not. 🙃
I think the biggest issues would be if you're fine with the graphics and QoL. The game did come out in 2012 so for that time the graphics were good. Not so much now with NH. But some of the design choices are better with the old games. At least imo. Like the grass patterns and winter/snow feel they work so much better than in NH. I don't know how to describe it.

There's a lot of QoL features that NH has that NL does not. Items don't auto-stack, you can't terrraform, you can't place furniture outside, but you can decorate the town with public work projects (pwp) like benches, street lights, archways.

There's a bit more sense of community and progression than I got from NH. You get to see your tree and town grow as shops expand and come in. Nooklings has many upgrades.

If you really liked the design sim of NH and are hoping for that with NL than I would say probably not. But it still has a lot to offer.
