Hey everyone I had a question that I am asking myself. Last night, when I went to get some sleep I couldn't fall asleep. I was laying in bed wide awake for over seven hours until 5am this morning when the sun was starting to come up and I realized that sleep wasn't coming. This has happened before in the past but its only been a handful of times most of them due to me staying up far too long working on those essays I procrastinated. However this time was different, maybe a medical specialist can chime in here but I don't understand what happened.
Is this a warning sign of insomnia or do y'all think this is a one time thing considering I wasn't actively trying to stay awake? I will say the thunderstorm that was going on didn't help as I got flashes of lightning in my room every few minutes from the storm.
So yeah I have been awake over 26 hrs now with no sleep and I am worried that if I fall asleep during the day the same thing will happen again tonight. Apologies if I am not making much sense.

I once stayed up for three days straight and I didn’t even have any caffeine. I typically end staying fully awake for an equivalence of two days if I’m going to Taiwan as the trip via the plane is basically an entire day itself and I’m already up for the day when I leave from the US and the time zone change to moving forward 12-13 hours depending the time of the year essentially makes it another day added that I’m awake depending on when the plane lands in Taiwan and what time I took off from the US. Sometimes you might fall asleep for a few minutes and then feel refreshed but you can make it through the day with very little sleep. As long as you don’t drive more than a few minutes or collapse while cooking, you should be okay.

Depending on your age it shouldn't cause any serious issues but I wouldn't make a habit out of it. I know it wasn't intentional. We've all had nights where we couldn't sleep and it sucks. Just be sure to get to bed at a proper time tonight or when you can. Your sleeping schedule might be off for a bit.

I know I used to struggle with sleep and sometimes still do so I take any measures I can to get a proper night sleep. Like sleeping in total or almost near darkness. I have some electronics in my room that have little red lights ect so I put some electrical tape over them to hide light.

You should be fine with one day, but you'll probably feel it. Staying up for a day+ isn't ideal and I wouldn't aim for that. On average they say 7-9 hours is ideal. I'm lucky if I get 6 and that's really bad so I'm not one to talk about getting the right amount of sleep lol.

if this is a one time thing then it probably isn’t anything serious. i think this happens once to everyone but it can cause issues - a few months ago i didn’t sleep at all until 6 AM and when i woke up shortly after, my legs went numb and i thought i was having some sort of out of body experience. well i mean, not quite but it was sort of similar to that feeling when you’re receiving anesthesia and your body feels funny. thats the best i can explain it as, i also had continuous issues later that day.

awake for 26 hours is crazy, i’m no medical professional but it’s probably best that you don’t drive or do anything like that even if you do feel fine.

That sounds like it could've been sleep paralysis? I've had that happen a few times and the first time was so scary since I didn't know what was going on. It took what felt like 5 minutes or so for control of my body to come back.

i thought it would only be sleep paralysis if you started seeing things that weren’t there and/or if you couldn’t move at all? i wasn’t seeing things and i could move. it was just that my body was partially numb and i actually thought i was going to faint.

it’s difficult to explain 😅 the best way i can elaborate is it was that floaty anesthesia feeling. like, you can feel your body but at the same time you can’t really.

Ugh sleep paralysis sucks. I've had that occur to me a few times and it was pretty scary like you said. Idk if anyone else has had this happen to them but I also absolutely hate it when I have those dreams when it feels like you are drowning or can't move (I guess trying to find the words to explain it) and when you wake up it felt so real but it wasn't. Not sure if anyone else remembers their dreams though.
