After a long hiatus, I got a second copy of the game and now I have a question.
Are there certain words or phrases the villagers will recognize when you send them a letter? If so, what words or phrases?
I thought all that mattered was how long or short the letter was and whether or not there's an item attached. However, I sent Miranda a letter welcoming her to the town and her reply sounded like she recognized the word "welcome".

The word "welcome" is the only word i've found that they recognize. Every time a villager moves into a town of mine I mail them a welcome letter and a welcome gift and they always reply with something along the lines of "thank you for welcoming me" or "thank you for the welcome letter"

This cartridge is too small for turning villagers into a chat bot. They do spellcheck to some extent but don't have too many options to reply according to words. I've heard they sometimes recognize "love" in letters though, didn't test so not sure.

I doubt they recognize even that. I sent a late -like very late, a month has passed- welcoming letter to a villager and he just responded with a regular letter. Maybe it happened because the timing was off but again I doubt. Someone should try sending a random letter to a villager right after they moved in

There's been a thread about villagers recognising limited words in letters here. You might find some of the information on there useful :)

I have often wondered about the same thing, and it appears that we are not alone.
