Self-indulgent artists on deviantart

I follow a few groups, and like 2 specific artist on dA. They're both pretty nice people. But I have seen those MS paint people act like they're the greatest thing around.

Some of these artists are really full of themselves and feel like they deserve to be treated as royalty just because they can draw.

No, honestly i think any artists that react that way are doing so because they have been mistreated by customers or other people in the past. Like if an artist is firm on the stance that "they will never, ever do requests!!" it may seem rude to someone just viewing at their page but it probably makes perfect sense to the artist, who may have had to deal with a bunch of ungrateful requesters in the past.

Ofc some people do take it too far and publicly shaming someone is usually never the answer but in the majority of cases I think most of what people deem "cocky behavior" is just misinterpreted self defense.

Also.. how an artist prices their art is really none of ur concern.. js. Just don't buy it if it's out of your price range

You have a point about the rudeness thing.

About the pricing thing, I'm not saying that you shouldn't price your art at what you think it's worth. I'm saying that if someone disagrees with your pricing, publicly shaming them is simply immature.

Yeah dude, there's this entire culture on calling people out especially on tumblr and it's terrible. Call outs are bad enough even when they're necessary, such as in the case of a known rapist or etc. Calling out/publicly shaming someone for not agreeing with you is total bs..

i understand but.... dont be rude to artists and youll be fine???

their art is probably very important to them and just popping in (like who are u) and saying that they overprice their art can be taken as an insult.

its pp childish to tell them that too, i think. i can afford u lower you prices lmao. esp if other people are still buying

Well, I totally agree with you. An artist is out there trying to make money and they are essentially a "business". So they have every right to impose rules on potential buyers, because they want to be able to offer a good service to people in exchange for respect (and their money). However, they should still treat other customers with respect, too. JUST because they have had some ungrateful and quite frankly rude requesters in the past, does not mean that they are allowed to treat other people badly, too, especially when it is HIGHLY unlikely that other people would do that. That just makes them just as bad. I do think that they should be allowed to have strict guidelines but they should still treat other people with respect. I mean, when you go to a shop, do you see security guards having to stop and check you when you go in just because they had someone rob their store before and they don't trust people who shop there in case they do it again? No, you don't see that. Instead, the shop will take measures to improve their security and impose harsher restrictions on customers. And I know that I am taking it to an extreme, but it is a similar concept. We should all just treat each other with respect no matter what. And even if someone is being disrespectful to you, the least you can do is just politely end the conversation with them and move on with your life. Simple as!

Wait, what? People actually buy things for money on Deviantart? Didn't know that. Thought it was just like any other thing where someone requests a sig using a format, the artist makes it, gives it to them, and they're done.

You didn't know? o_O People buy art for thousands of $$ on there

There's even a Job Service and Job Offers thread in the deviantART forum for RLC, as well as a commission widget from deviantART themselves (though I wouldn't recommend using it.)

I've been around deviantART since like 2009, and I've never came across anyone who was let's say a pro and pointed out someone else's "incorrect" pricing for their art. I personally see deviantART in different groups (i.e: the artists who do everything cute/kawaii, abstract artists, traditional artists, fan-fiction writers, amateurs, etc..) and they typically stay within their groups when it comes to leaving comments. This doesn't apply to everyone, but in general. My apologizes for not seeing the full point of this..but this type of thing doesn't even happen this often anymore these days, at least from what I see. I've never seen anyone on deviantart brag or boast about their art either :/

Well yeah but usually people selling art isn't a business, there are a few ppl that are very professional about it but loads more that are not professional.

Not to say that they shouldn't be punished for their actions which, inevitably they will (rudeness will deter customers for example) but so many people think artists are being rude when they're just being human. There are going to be immature people & when people think artists are exempt to immaturity or obligated to be kind simply because they're artists that's when there's a problem.

It's not about respecting people, it's about people putting artists on a pedestal and then getting angry when their artists don't react as mature as they'd like them to. That's truly disrespectful imo. Treat people like people regardless of their talents and you'll be fine.
