Second islander item gone?

So I have two characters on my island. I built some DIY items with my main character and dropped it for my secondary character to pick up. I had the secondary character pick them up and then switched leaders to be my second character. When I checked in my inventory I couldn’t find the items. I even checked inside my home inventory and couldn’t find it either. Is this a glitch? I’m so confused...

Your items will be in the recycle box in the Resident Services building. When a non-leader picks up an item, instead of going into their inventory, it goes to the recycle box. If you want it to go directly in your inventory, swap leaders before picking up items.
