scavenger hunt question

so I played a game of finding the treasure with beau but I was unable to find it in the time allotted so afterwords I went looking for fossils and found it but it won't let me open it and beau won't take it as a gift nor does he have a dialog option for it

what should I do with it?

I did that once but it said something along the lines of "what could this be?" So I'm assuming that we were supposed to do something else.

I found it once after the timer ended, but I was able to give it back to my villager. I’m not sure why you not able to talk to Beau and give it back.

That's so bizarre! I often fail at the treasure hunt and the villager who initiated it will take back the gift and essentially say "see what you missed out on? haha you suck, too bad so sad"
