I have a bit of a predicament here.
I've never really wanted to TT on my main town because I like playing it naturally, but I need to get a certain villager out. Someone is in boxes on my cycling town and I would really like to move them into my main.
Cookie said she'll be leaving on the 7th, so if I TT to the 8th, what's the safest bet to getting back to this date safely? One day at a time or some other way?

I tt'd to the day my villager was in boxes and then tt'd back to the day that she told me she was moving. My reasoning was that moving backwards any amount of time counts as one day, so technically I was back the morning after she moved, but on the same day she announced. There was no one in the village. It worked for me, but I haven't read that this is 100% guaranteed to work every time. It was something that I thought was logical and it worked and the extra bonus was I'm back on track with the date and time being correct.

Day by day is the safest. Two days hops can be more efficient but it leaves a lot more room for mistakes imo.

I switched between day by day to two day hops when I was cycling. Never lost a villager yet! (unless someone has decided to move in my short break orz)

Oh wait, after reading your post more carefully, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you TT past the date that a villager will be in boxes, they'll be lost. Also, no matter how far you TT forwads, you can leap backwards and it will only count as a single day.

That was my concern Darumy, that someone would move in while I was moving backwards.

I knew no one would move out from the village as long as someone has stated that they're leaving and has given a date, so I felt safe enough in moving to that specified date. It was getting back to the original time that I was concerned about. I've had someone plot-block me before when I was suppose to pick up a long awaited villager. ( That was my first time hearing that a 10 villager can move in without being invited.) :(

If your villager has said she'd be moving on the 7th, you can safely TT forward to the 7th or 8th and she'll be gone. Since she's in the process of moving, no other villagers can move out during that period of time, so you should be safe.

Then you can TT back to the present day. TTing back isn't as risky, since no matter how much time you TT back, the game just counts it as one day forward. Meaning that, for the purposes of other villagers pinging you, only 1-2 days will have passed since the move.

Just keep in mind that if you TT to the day after she'll be gone, she'll be in your wifi/streetpass void, so this can be an issue if you ever want to trade with someone who requests people to have clean wifi voids (if you have someone in your wifi or streepass void, they can move into the town of anyone you contact through those methods, but I think that apparently you can reset it just by visiting someone who already has 10 villagers, since the villager will try to move into their town and fail due to all the slots being filled, and will be erased).

If you want to keep her in boxes for trading, you can TT back and forward day by day, or you can simply calculate it. Remembering that TTing backward any amount of time counts as one day forward, if she said she's leaving in 5 days, TTing back to the present will make her move in 4. TTing to the day before she'd be in boxes and then TTing back to your current date will count as one day forward so she'll be in boxes. I hope this makes sense, I'm a bit sleepy!

When I want to be 100% safe when trying to get someone to move, I TT 1 day at a time and talk to everyone.

I do it day by day with the safety net method.
