never played rune factory but I've played one of the harvest moon games and it's really great! i'm a little lazy when it comes to playing it though lol
well, haven't really played rune factory yet (but im planning to buy it soon) so i cant really say lol but harvest moon is my childhood meheheh love the series
I can`t decide like this over the entire series.....
A Wonderful Life (Harvest Moon) was better IMO then for example Rune Factory.
However Rune Factory 2 was really good.
In general I would pick Harvest Moon. The farming attracts me more, but I do like the Rune Factory games. Still I prefer a Harvest Moon game, with the farming aspect done right. I like the slow pace in it. I`m already hyper in my head anyways, so if I`d play Call of Duty online, my head might explode....
Harvest Moon. For some reason it feels like Rune Factory tries to do too much at once and both the farming and the RPG aspect end up falling flat for me. :/
Harvest Moon has combat...? Do you mean Rune Factory?
I have Rune Factory 4 and Harvest Moon: A New Beginning and the original and I like Rune Factory 4 way more than the latter, even though I don't like the camera being so far out. Entering the bathroom to see the titles change and killing all your Prince Points or Princess Points and the events... the characters are great and adorable, like Vincent and Clorica.
Rune Factory series wins by a mile, by what I have played of both series.
I've never played a Harvest Moon game and Rune Factory 4 is my first Rune Factory game ever. But I really like it and enjoy playing it. There's a lot to do and it can be overwhelming at times, but you have a lot of freedom and it's just fun. That being said, I'd love to try playing Story of Seasons, though, if it ever comes out in Europe.
I treat both of them as a separate game since RF feels more like a RPG with farming than a full farming simulation like HM. If I have to say which game is better though, I would say it's RF as it has a lot of features.
I didn't play much of RF 1-3, but RF4 was full of features and I'm currently having a lot of fun playing it. There's so much things to do and accomplish, and the amazing variation in day-to-day dialog is amazing. It could be a different game, not related to Harvest Moon or Rune Factory, and I would still enjoy it immensely.
Meanwhile, Harvest Moon has its up and downs. The DS games were mostly, err, underwhelming, but there are some titles that are enjoyable. I love Mineral Town (BtN, FoMT) and it'll always be one of my favorite games, but so far the newer HM games couldn't really live up to MT. Though the last new HM game I played was Tales of Two Towns, I haven't tried A New Beginning or Story of Seasons.
In the end it depends on your taste in games, I guess? I grew up playing JRPG and I love games with a focus on story, so RF suits my taste more than HM.
I've never played any of the Rune Factory games, though I have read a lot of good feedback about Rune Factory 4. Once I am done with A New Beginning, I may consider picking it up. It's been awhile since I manged to really get into an RPG.
I haven't ever played any of the other RF games, but I have played RF4 and that game is one of my top three favorite games (behind only Skyward Sword and New Leaf, of course.) Compared to the newer Harvest Moons that I've played, like ToTT, ANB, and SoS, I DEFINITELY prefer RF... however, I consider Magical Melody (my first HM) better than BOTH RF and the newer Harvest Moons. Actually it bugs me that they don't make the HM games like Magical Melody anymore. I mean, 11(!!) bachelor/ettes? HOT DIGGITY DAMN, GIMME GIMME. I LOVED all the options available. Also I think the gameplay in MM is just better than in ANB and SoS. And the gameplay in RF4? Faaarrrrr superior to all of them, including MM. RF4 is just a really good game.
Rune Factory 4 blows all Harvest Moon games out of the water imo. The characters are a lot more interesting, the voice acting is superb, and the storyline is really good. There are so much events/scenarios in RF4 and some of them really take a toll on you emotionally. Personally, I'd choose RF over HM any day, it's almost disappointing to see such a small fanbase here lol.
I picked Harvest Moon. Don't get me wrong, I love Rune Factory a lot. But it is traditional RPG fare with some farming mixed in. Harvest Moon is a more special and unique game. I know no other game like Bokumono.
