I had an original 3DS and upgraded to the XL when it came out. I'd definitely say the plastic does feel a little thinner on the XL but it isn't something that would break easily. I would say the hinge on the XL also feels studier and the whole machine just feel better to hold.
I have a Ds Lite and a DS XL. While I definitely prefer the XL, I think the Lite is sturdier, I've had it since I was in 4th or 5th grade and it's survived a lot of drops!
I'm not going to text my theory for my XL, though, I am planning on keeping it as nice as possible, so I'm being extra careful.
I've had my xl since Harvest Moon ANB came out, and I haven't had many problems. Its been dropped a couple of times, but that's all. I never really risk taking it anywhere it won't be safe by my own standards. I'm a little mad that it got scratched up a little on the outside cover just from being in my purse while traveling. The worst thing I had in their was car keys..
Lets see.. My flame red OG 3DS I've had since September 12th of 2011, is pretty durable, only damage done was when I took it to work and it fell and hit the gravel so it has minor paint chipping on the bottom left of the back. The screen is a bit flimsy but that's bound to happen with anything that has to be open and closed a lot. I recently bought it a Skinomi skin guard and its no longer a finger print magnet.
I got my pink / white XL on February 20th, 2013, buying the last one in stock in my area. I immediately bought a skinomi skin guard before I started using it and the slight sheen it gives the matte is wonderful and has prevented many scratches. Ive dropped the pink / white 2 times on my tile floor. nothing has happened as of yet. the back does have that thing where it feels like the back cover will come off easily, as been said before, but not hollow.
I got my Pikachu XL on March 24th, same as above, but that "hollow" or "back cover falls off" feeling is not on it at all.
I recommend and absolutely love the skinomi skins, but i would love it more if they were not such a hassle to actually put on. The only thing exposed on any of my consoles are the L and R buttons
