I'm considering upgrading to a xl, but i have heard from many that the xl, compared to the normal 3ds, is really fragile, is this true?

I don't think so. This is the first I'm hearing of this.

Its definitely better than the original.

It probably would've been better if you Google searched this, and if nothing comes up, you can safely assume it's not.

Well, that's how i came about the rumor in the first place, people complaining about it

First time hearing this as well. I heard things like it seems like its made out of cheaper material or that the speakers aren't as loud as people hoped. Besides those comments people raved about the screen size, battery life, and even the material based on less smudges.

I have the AC LL one. I have to admit all XLs (have used multiple ones) have a squeaky back cover. It's a little hollow in the back.

I own a 3DS XL since last August, and I can assure that it still won't break easily unless you're clumsy enough. I noticed that the bottom cover can be easily snapped off if you get rid of the screws.

Oh I have actually noticed that. top half seems a little loose. But overall Im happy with them.

I have an XL and while I prefer it, I do see how it could be considered more fragile. If you did a drop test the XL would probably lose.

No problems with mine, even today my partner (annoyingly...) walked into the cable while it was charging and knocked it onto the floor and it's fine.

i've had mine for about a month and a half and no problems

The only issue with mine is that the back cover is squeaky if you press on it in the right spot, along with the top feeling a bit loose at times.
Only issue I've ever had with any of my DS' is when my DS Lite top screen almost completely broke off the hinge, but it was close to 3 years old. So I think it's extremely sturdy, even if you use it a lot.

I have owned XL devices and currently own a pink one as well. I've dropped it already 5 times and the 5th time was the first i've ever got as much damage as a barely noticeable paint chip on the corner of it. They are durable but like any device run a change of being broken when dropped. I suggest getting a case for it if your really worried about it.

but in terms of the xl compared to the 3ds, it is much better and sturdier.

It's a matte finish so no finger prints woo

I can't find a good one for the regular 3DS, but I think that both are fairly sturdy though.

I've had mine since February and I noticed the top screen has a little bit of play when angled to the lock you'd use to play it on. But if it was totally rigid, this could also be problematic, and it's not even noticeable unless you physically move it about.

Mine is very robust. But I agree with Treasu(red), I have a Game Boy Colour from when they came out, and my brother had one also-he was pretty young at the time, so they got dropped, kicked accidentally, chucked about in school bags etc. I was playing mine just the other week. Pokemon Yellow to name the title! Those things were amazing! My Wii has had some punishment during transportation and still plays like the day it was bought, my ds lite is in regular use ad it took punishment when I first bought it, I played quite heavily for ages.

Don't worry, the XL is a great little (big?) console but so far has fared well being thrown into handbags, rucksacks, accidentally falling off the bed. Even the clear plastic case around it has stood up to the tribulations it's faced so far!

They feel a lot cheaper made than a standard DS. Much cheapier plastic and very thin plastics too.
