Hi all!

So today I was thinking about ReTail and how frustrating it is to see my villagers' prized possessions constantly for sale, despite my efforts to keep their important furniture in their houses. I like my villagers to be civilised and have a bed, lamp, some kind of chair, and a dresser. Other than that, I don't really mind unless they have a house I particularly like.

My solution at the moment is to fill all th slots at ReTail with plants. I really like villagers having plants in their houses, and I think they go with practically everything. Plus then it gives ReTail this adorable garden shop vibe, which I love! (I really wish Leif's garden shop was bigger.)

So, what do you do with ReTail? Do you let your villagers buy whatever they want? Do you try to give them their stuff back? Do you put anything up for sale? Do you care?

I just let them do what they want. I have put things up for sale but rarely. Right now my retail seems to be cursed with a small round cactus that won't stay gone. Every time it gets bought it shows up again within 2 days(it's in there now for about the 5th time). Idk why they keep buying it just to put it back for sale again. I'm starting to think it will be there forever.

I just try to sell items for more than retail gives you for them to make a profit. I usually put up either gemstones or fossils and set my price 50% above retail price. I used to try and keep their furniture the way it is, but it became way too much of a hassle to do so I just gave up. My mayor is corrupt in swindling townspeople now. lol

I have a bunch of junk set at 99,999 bells so they won't buy it and it's filled so they won't put their stuff out.

Since bells are so easy to come by, my mayors are quite generous. I like to fill up the tables with desirable goods and set the prices at half of what's suggested. The only time anything is sold, the prospective buyer will ping me and ask if it's a good deal. 50% of the time, I'll tell the varmint to save his/her bells. If it's a buy, I know my people aren't getting a bum deal.

in re-tail, i put flowers up for sale for 999,999 bells so my villagers can't buy or sell furniture. i like to think of it as a garden shop too!

i care about my villagers' houses to an extent. i don't try to give them their stuff back or keep their houses original but i give them furniture that matches their theme. also i avoid giving them bugs, fish, and fossils

Personally, I don't really care if my villagers stay original, so I just let them do what they want and buy whatever. If it looks awful in their house, then I'll gift them something that I think looks better. Nbd.

I like to keep my villagers houses as original as possible, and add things that go with their theme. I even fill retail with whatever items that help make it look like a cute little antique shop, and just price everything at 999,999 bells. I do like the garden shop idea though!

I let mine do they want. With the occasional pushing them towards an item that's been in retail for weeks that nobody is buying >> Even though it often looks bad I do like them (to some degree) decorating their own houses. It gives them some more character in my eyes. Like they pick the furniture they like and set it up just like I do! lol

Lot of players put flowers or ore in their retail at a high price so villagers can't buy items.
That's something that I don't do because you have to talk to them in order to get them to buy. If you don't talk to them when they ping the item they can't buy.
I make sure to fill the retail with redone furniture that the villagers will buy. I have extra items in my secret storage to replace a piece if I let a villager buy it. If the boy villagers ping for a pink sofa I don't talk to them. If you keep your retail full they can't sell their stuff. I also started buying RV items and putting those up for sale.

I'm not worried about their houses but do say no to any large fish. Right now Tutu has a Princess Bed, Princess Sofa, Sweets Player and a Regal Bed. Think I messed up while playing as a extra player and gave her the extra bed. Surprised that she has still has both beds in her house.

I usually just let them do whatever they want, and I don't really pay attention to it much. I put up my duplicated fossils in the retail space for a higher price that what the retail actually offers, if while I'm in there one of my villagers ping another villagers items I just let them buy it as long as it isn't hideous

i usually just let villagers put whatever they want up for sale, and if i think it's a vital part of their house, i buy it and send it right back to them lol! i try to keep villagers' houses original, but usually i just end up making do with sending them stuff that fits the feel of their houses. their houses may not be original anymore, but they still look frickin cool! hehe

in my cycling town, where i want absolutely NO changes to my villagers' houses, i always end up putting seashells up for sale for max price, so nobody ever buys anything from the flea market slots nor can they put anything up for sale.

and i LOVE the idea of putting plants up for sale all the time- i love plant-y houses (heck just look at my mayor's house! every room is filled with plants), and i think all my villagers' houses would also look hecka cute with a lot of plants! thanks for the tip!!

To be fair, any improvements to town are more or less paid by the mayor, since they donate so little. They deserve to be forced to contribute!

I hadn't thought about them selling anything, because frankly the same ol' pieces are in Retail and they never seem to change. I think Ribbot just sold this great robo-table he had, though. I think I'm going to take your idea, like you said plants go well with everything! I usually just ignore their pings at Retail in the end. They usually wander over to the worst things. I also never fulfill their fish/bug requests for this same reason. I'm a bit picky... xD

Yeah, it is pretty annoying to see them sell everything they have to their name, it was even worse in wild world. I avoid this using the same method as you which is putting flowers or fruits in all the available spaces in retail for a ridiculous price. Villagers are such cheapskates in this game that they wouldn't even dare pay anything over 280 bells. In wild world though, you had absolutely no control over it and for some reason they donated anything and everything in that game. By the 2nd day of living in your town, their house would be bare and the only things they'd have in there would be fossils and clothes. At least in New leaf they aren't as reckless, and keep a couple of things.

My town is currently producing red and yellow cosmos at a frightening pace, so I just filled all the slots with those. It looks pretty, plus keeps the villagers from selling something I'd like them to keep. If I come across something special, I'll swap it out and then wait for that villager to ping, but it's usually easier to just mail it to them.

I'm not terribly rigid about keeping them original, but I do like to try giving them things that look nice.

As said in other comments, just put random fruit or flowers for 999,999 bells so your villagers can't buy anything or put anything up for sale. Then your villager houses stay the same :)

Thanks to all for the interesting read.I think I'll try the all-flower scheme in one of my towns to see how it looks. EDIT: Tried this, but walking into Re-Tail and seeing 8 flower pots was just too much to stomach. It's now back to a much more satisfying mix of this 'n that. I'll just let my varmints decide for themselves what to sell and buy and what their homes look like.

Yesterday I read in another thread that someone put items like medicine and stationary in those spots and I thought that was a really good idea.

I want to do that, but at the same time I've gotten some neat furniture from my villagers selling their stuff, and I don't really care what the inside of their house looks like cause I don't go inside them too much. Soo, I'm not sure what to do yet. Maybe half & half.
