Resetting trick for villager house placement?

I'm offered a villager from another town, and want to reset for the house placement. Will the only thing that will change is the placement of the house, and not the villager? I'm afraid to lose a dream villager!

i got Vesta, Freya, Muffy & Stitches from other peoples towns, and just reset for the house placement ^^

I was worried about this too! Someone else in the giveaway thread said they did it and although a few times the villager didn't show up and they had someone in the campsite instead, they still got the villager next time they went on.
