So I've restarted my town to get more fun out of the game.

Any tips while picking a map or something?
I need pointers with a layout/Ways to start out etc.

Well first off you can decide how many ponds you do/don't want, and if you want the town tree to be by town hall or not. It's really just main building placement and river placement that decides a town map for me. So decide what's important to you and what isn't then go from there!

Some people are super picky and only want certain grass styles or town fruits, and won't keep a town with more than 4 rocks and two ponds. Some people just want retail to be next to town hall and don't care about anything else. It's all just preference.

What is my favorite town fruit?
How many ponds do I want? (there is ALWAYS 1 pond next to Re-Tail)
What type of grass do I want?
Do I want my beach on the left of town, or the right?
What color train station do I want?
What kind of cobblestone do I want in front of my Town Hall and Re-Tail?
Is a rock in a bad place?
Do I like where Town Hall, Re-Tail and the Plaza are?
Are my starting villagers nice? (because some people have a hard time moving them out)

I think there may be a few more, but this is what I can remember as of now xD

Another thing to add onto Hoppy~Shnell's post is

Do you want a private (one where you have to dive to reach) beach? Usually it's good for breeding hybrids.
What river layout do you want? One with lots of twists and turns or straight, one that goes through the whole town or just halfway.
What starting villagers do you want?
Is there enough room for lots of pwp and landscaping?
What direction should the slopes going to the beach be? Horizontal or vertical
What color town hall do you want?

I don't think it's really good to be too picky though. These are just some suggestions that you might take into consideration. Some people get too obsessed with the little details that it takes forever and that in and of itself might take away the fun of the game too. Just pick the most important details and go with it. Good luck with the new town^^
