Redeeming Snowflakes?

So while doing a trade I noticed that under snowflakes it has an option to "redeem" the snowflakes for bells, does this really work or is it just there for no reason? And if so how many bells is a snowflake worth? Also will we be able to redeem them after Christmas?

I figured as much, I just didn't have the guts to test it out, especially since my 2 snowflakes leftover have no use whatsoever

I think the redeem option was for when you could use it to submit the code HAPPYBIRTHDAYTBT for 1 snowflake earlier, at least that's what I remember.

You could spend your snowflakes on Christmas lights at least. They only cost one snowflake.
