Well the original thread content was just a spiel that no one agreed with, and I feel like all the dissenting opinions have at this point just beaten the thing to death, adding on to it serves no purpose. So if you're reading this please just ignore the thread and let it sink already, there's nothing to be gained by repeating others' opinions ad nauseum and I'd like to see other topics besides my own, for better or worse.

I've made the 10 million in one hit.

I spent a few million, and had turnips stored literally everywhere.

I don?t think most of them are unfair, hard yes, but unfair no. I like that not everyone gets them, that makes it more of an acchievement. Animal crossing games try to keep you interested in playing more than a year, and those badges are a good way to do that. They are not for casual players but for those who are more serious/obsessed with the game and want a real challenge.

That said, I like that some can take a long time to get, but I don?t enjoy when they are out of your control.
I have had the beautiful town ordinance since the beginning and never saw many weeds. Since this game-mechanic exists, it disables most people to unintentionally work towards that badge like it was originally intended. I don?t mind the badge but they need to have a workaround so that people who have the wrong ordinance don?t miss out.

The streetpass, host and traveller ones are hard to do if you don?t know many people who have the game, aren?t active online or just don?t live in a big city - streetpass being the worst in that regard as you require strangers that live in your area. I personally don?t take my 3ds anywhere so eventhough I live in a bigger city, I never really had many streetpass-encounters. If they don?t "fix" this badge, I wont mind too much since I understand that they aren?t meant to be gained by every player. They are more of a reflection of your playing style and prefferences, but certainly also the horror of some completionists.

The game designers don’t owe you anything. Why should we celebrate mediocrity?

It's not about delusions of being owed anything, or celebrating mediocrity, it's about not having to play for 4-6 years just to obtain a badge that really shouldn't take that long at the maximum. It's Animal Crossing, not a poor man's Dark Souls. If I opted to play solo instead of with other players, then those badge requirements should be more realistic since this isn't a game of or about skill

I think that's the point of the badges though. If you want a gold badge, which represents excellence, you have to be willing to put in extreme effort to get it. It's not as though getting the badges gives you an advantage in the game - they're 100% optional. You can totally ignore them if you want.

And I say this as someone on a quest to get all gold badges. I want to know that when I earn them all, it's going to reflect how much work I had to put in to getting them. I don't want it to be easy because I'll just lose interest in it.

Although I agree that the Streetpass requirement is unfair and Nintendo should have thought about that a little harder. For people who live in rural areas it could be literally impossible to get a streetpass, that's crappy.

I'm glad the rest are hard though, personally.

Me. I've not had a single streetpass since the 3DS' release. Not kidding.

I'm lucky in that I was a university student for the first bit I played ACNL, so taking my 3ds with me to school pretty much guaranteed me with a streetpass or five for the day. Now that I'm a stay at home mom I'm getting way fewer streetpasses, lol. I'll have to work some magic to get that badge, not sure how I'll hit that goal yet.

The turnip badge isn't too hard to obtain if you buy enough turnips. I usually buy about 600k bells worth of turnips and assuming you make roughly 1 mil in profit per time, it would take 10 weeks. I agree with the streetpass one though. I remember when the game first came out, I had a summer daycare type thing and I would bring my 3ds with me and got a couple street passes, but definitely not enough to get a badge of any sort. Since then, I have gotten maybe 1 or 2 a few years later, and since then, I have gotten none :v And with the weeding badge, it certainly is annoying to have the beautiful town ordinance making the gold weed badge really hard. With the gold medalist badge, I understand where you're coming from, but I remember getting that badge pretty quickly although I did enjoy the tours quite a bit at the time XD

In your original post, you referred to the game as a "real-life simulation." Take a page from the real world and accept that, with the exception of a very elite few, most people don't maximize every opportunity in their lives. Celebrate the badges that you get and appreciate your world.

And if getting the street pass goal is truly so important, you can pick up another 3DS on Craigslist for ~$50. To me that defeats the purpose, but to each his or her own.

Streetpass is the only badge that I think is entirely unreasonable. The others simply require hard work for the reward, but Streetpass has so many other factors in play. It's the only badge category that I don't even have bronze in.

Honestly.. I have two other 3DS systems, but I don't really want to cheat the system.

How is it cheating?

It's doing exactly what nintendo wants us to do.

Buy more consoles to complete impossible badges, for those who don't get out into groups, or at all.

i agree with what other people said about how it's kind of supposed to take a long time. like, if you don't know to go island bug hunting a lot to get a lot of money, getting your house to maximum also takes a really long time. i think that some of the requirements are maybe outside of the casual player, but also maybe if they are casual players they do not mind. i am not going to get those badges you're talking about. i am not going to try. for people who do want those badges, then there are ways to get them.

this is not saying that it's not okay to be frustrated by it or anything (i do not want to get these badges because i would not ever have the patience to do it), just that nintendo probably did make them really hard because they're goals for the really dedicated players and if a dedicated player can do it in a week or two, then why would they play for very long?

I think there is a difference here. The badges are good the way they are because (most) are designed in a way that you slowly but surely work towards them in your daily play. You don?t need to do anything you wouldn?t normally do, but if you happen to not use some of the features the game offers you, that is reflected in the badges you earn. The later aspect makes them more personal if you ask me, one look at a player?s badges and you can make an accurate guess what they like to do most in new leaf.

That said, of course most harder "trophies" in games CAN be obtained rather quickly through extensive grinding. But if that wasn?t the case, the players who don?t grind to get a trophy soon would probably never obtain them. Not all "hardcore" players of this game would or like the idea of grinding for hours each day for specific badges. They like playing the game daily and to slowly work towards the badges they are missing. Surely, you can grind for the badges and get them sooner, but most people, not only the "casuals", wouldn?t do that.
For me badges still work to drag out the time you spend with the game. We could "finish" an AC game in weeks if we did TT and were prepared for hours of grinding, but the mayority of players don?t do that. We enjoy doing the things we like and winding down from everyday life and the worries of the adult world. We don?t come to new leaf to see how fast we can get all the badges or all the items. And for that type of "non-casual" player, I think the badges do a decent job to bring them back for some more new leaf.
