A friend was telling me this was a feature even in New Leaf but i never noticed this before? Yesterday in New Horizons, rain watered all of my flowers. The next day a LOT of new flowers bloomed obviously, but what struck me as odd was that even flowers I had that were completely isolated from flowers of the same type grew new flowers.

For example, my purple rose that was completely alone just spawned purple rose buds right beside it. Has this always been a feature with rain? Because certainly I would've noticed this in previous titles or from watering plans manually myself. Unless watering plants manually doesn't have this effect.

Yea I’ve noticed this also
Rain must got some magic in it or something

I think plants can reproduce asexually in this game with any sort of water. Maybe you haven't watered the lone plants before?

oh no ive watered lone plants before! never seen anything like this unless everytime ive done it was just no luck.

yes lone plants can always reproduce, even without rain. you may just water them and they have a chance to reproduce.
however, there's a lower chance that they will reproduce if it's just them alone.

my other question then is, is this new to new horizons?

Mine did that too! It rained last night and my single purple rose bloomed another purple rose!

hmm Im not entirely sure, I have a strong feeling it isn't -- I used to do a lot of flower breeding in NL and I could swear I had flowers growing from lone flowers.

It rained for me last night as well and like 20 new flowers popped up on my island (no exaggeration, though I do have lots of flowers)! I also got pink windflowers on its own from 1 parent, but I've noticed this happen when I watered my flowers individually (my flowers are unorganised so a random tulip will appear next to 1 tulip and 2 windflowers for example)

It seemed like NL, when it rained, didn't increase the spawn rate of flowers the next day, I remember always getting 5 max or something. But I don't know, it's been too long since I played that game. I also don't remember flowers spawning from a single parent in NL or other AC games.
