I'm buying a R4 3ds cartridge to play some old games. Will it work on a new Nintendo 3DS XL? It already has few games in it and it is 2014 edition. Does it has negative effects like getting my 3ds bricked? *shudder*.
Assuming you update the card's firmware to the latest, it should be compatible with every model of the DS and 3DS family of systems, even on the latest 3DS/New 3DS firmware. That's because it'll be marked as one of the white-listed DS games, therefore Nintendo won't detect you for simply using it.
It's worth mentioning that despite the card of your choice being compatible with your 3DS model, you're still only be able to play DS games with it by default.
There's zero risk on getting your hardware bricked, unless you're incorrectly making changes to its NAND.
That just reminds me of when I was in China and someone purchased an R4 from a market and it worked perfectly, so I went back and got the same one but it was fake and didn't read...
