Sad to hear, but at the same time I'm not really surprised - I expected this to happen a few years ago. They went mostly quiet after Will Wright stepped down.
You realize spore was one of the first games to have mandatory DRM installed as a backdoor during the program initial installation? The game wasn't even fully finished. I respect that it was a mildly enjoyable game, but it suffered from EA management.
If there's anything I know about game companies, it's that just because a subsidiary game dev disbands from their publisher, it doesn't mean they're done with game projects for good. Cavia disbanded in 2011 and still managed to push out another game for their most popular series in 2014. So there's always an off chance they're just disbanding from EA as a publisher to work on something on their own terms. It's generally not a bad thing.
When I saw this I knew Sim City & Spore were dead in the water. It's been years since Spore's PC incarnation that was good, and all those bad Wii & DS side games, so I kinda figured that was dead, but I always held out that we could get another Sim City like SC4 that was good. Maxis put their heart into that one.
