questions about amiibos

Hey I'm late to the game in the whole amiibo thing
I have a few questions.

1. I have an old ds. I know I have to buy a reader. What will the reader update my DS to (this is actually pretty important to me so yeah)? Right now I'm on 11.2 I think. I'd have to look.

2.Is the update id need with the reader? I don't have internet at home just mobile with a data plan.

3.I know series 1 is just characters and 2 is the rvs right?

4. How much would be a good ball park to start with? Are series 1 still being traded around the forum?

5. Anything else I need to know?

6. I have all my dreams but one would it still be worth trying to get them? Would it be worth the cost?

1&2) Its the hardware on the system if its not labeled "NEW 3ds XL" or just new some place on the package you bought it in then it you need a reader, doesn't matter the software update- unless your talking about the animal crossing update then if so yes.
3) Their is like 4 series? (i think don't quote me.) The RV ones are their own series called "Welcome" .

As far as I know, you don't need any major update to use the reader. It's a standalone reader that communicates wirelessly with your 3DS/3DSXL (New 3DS has it built in)

If it needed an update, it would have been a general update you got on your DS. If you haven't been updating, you may need to visit some place with wifi and catch up on updates. Especially if you haven't gotten the Welcome Amiibo update for New Leaf installed.

Series 1-4 are the cards meant to go with HHD; you can scan them into NL and ask the characters to move in.
Series 5, Welcome to Amiibo, are the new RV characters. They cannot be scanned into HHD.
the figures can be scanned in to get RVs and order furniture as well.
The Sanrio series are characters with RVs but they weren't released in the US.

4. How much would be a good ball park to start with? Are series 1 still being traded around the forum?

No idea, they're still around but it would probably be hard to complete a set. If you're just looking for your faves it is probably not too bad though?

Look up the amiibo guides to see what figures scan in and what you get from them.

That really depends on your dreamie -- tbh now that so many people have the cards it shouldn't be that hard to find someone who will scan your dreamie in and let you come adopt them. but if it's just a dollar or two on ebay I personally would do it!

Thank you both for the replies it makes so much more sense to me now. I do have the welcome amiibo update so it sounds like it's fine hopefully I'll take the plunge and get a reader...one a store someplace has them in stock hah hah.

If you're up to the welcome amiibo update you should definitely be fine then!! Good luck finding the reader soon -- I see them at gamestop pretty often.

The amiibo readers cost about $10, I think.

I think I paid $14 or so for mine? iirc retail was $20. In any case, don't pay those crazy amazon prices! Look for it in person at a gamestop or target.
