So I've been giving Lolly a lot recently, I think I just gave her her 4th outfit yesterday, how many can she fit in in her wardrobe? I really would want to know the limit lol

Sorry, I don't know the exact answer (maybe people can look into the code for the answer) but I've also gifted Julian tons of outfits to get rid of the ugly one he received from his last village (probably gave him over 10) and he STILL wears that monstrosity. It's like a green and orange workout shirt. They may pick and choose their outfits rather than getting rid of the oldest one when they hit a "maximum" limit :((((

Tysm for the info, I actually thought the older outfits will get pushed out of her wardrobe, I guess that's not the case, that's really interesting to know

prettyyyyy sure that villagers will always be inclined to keep items that match their preferred style/colors over any others. also i'm not sure....that its been proven they will ever get rid of a clothing item completely. like, i've never seen that said anywhere. :(

so while they may wear certain items less if you gift them ones they naturally are more inclined to like - they may still wear anything that was previously gifted to them, regardless. it's a source of great suffering for me, lol

My (very, very spoiled) Bunnie has at least a dozen clothing items, and she cycles between them quite regularly. I seemingly haven't hit a cap yet.

Casually rummaging through her wardrobe (which definitely isn't an invasion of privacy or anything), I can see outfits I gave her ages ago next to ones I gave her quite recently. Repeatedly checking her wardrobe causes the displayed outfits to cycle, however she still appears to own everything she's received so far.

(And yes, I've manually given her a copy of her own default clothes.)

I was really hoping they would get rid of old clothing. Some hats clip through villager ears and it’s so irritating. They should bring back the flea market from wild world so I can buy their ugly clothes back.

Although obviously it's too late if they've been gifted (or worse, delivery quest'd...) ugly clothing, Harv's Island is a very useful way to "test" clothing on a villager before actually committing to giving them it.

I figured that out too late unfortunately 😩

At least there's the old "reset via Amiibo Card"...for what it's worth, at any rate. :P

But at least, accepting imperfection is a beautiful thing in and of itself. Ultimately, we want our villagers to be happy, so if it brings them joy to wear that hideous, dreadfully unfitting baby romper, then we can at least cheer them on in their individual self-expression. :')

(...An alternative way to look at "that one terrible outfit" is that it's a nice occasional incentive to gift them a new outfit in its place. After all, the villager changes immediately after receiving it, so you'll not have to look at it for a while after taking the cue and giving them something better to wear.)
