So I know that the silver axe always generates a symbol on the tree to allow mushrooms to spawn.

And I know that a tree takes 3 hits to be cut down.

what I do not know is does the silver axe have to hit all 3 times for the symbol to appear? I want to use the golden axe to perform the first two hits, and the silver for the 3rd to generate the symbol since the silver axe is so hard for me to obtain, but want to be sure that this works first before trying since the silver axe is so hard for me to obtain (catch 22).

Thanks.

Yes you can hit it 2 times with the golden axe and the last one with the silver axe.

If you can't get the design you want open your gates for a nearby visitor. Chop the tree and if it's the wrong design hit the wifi switch.
You'll be outside the train station and the tree will be back again. Repeat until you get the right design.

As long as the last swing is from the silver axe, there will be a special stump. So hitting it twice with the gold axe and then with the silver axe is the best way to do it.

I never knew this. Just when I thought I'd known everything about the game I keep learning little secrets or tricks! This is something cool to know!

Yeah I have lots of silver axes and they tend to last me a very long time since I only ever use them to do the last hit on a tree. I'll use the gold axe until that point. It's a handy tip to know :)

I play on the New 3DS XL - which unfortunately does not have a wifi switch (that I can find at least) on the outside like the old 3DS's - I think this is Nintendo way of sneakly trying to remove this trick from everyone's bag.
