I caught a bug that was just flying around, not while I was doing a round, nor was it in his box previously. I'm like 99% sure I wasn't able to sell the bug.

I think after you sell all the bugs in your cage, talk to him again and chose "Something else..." From that, you can either sell him other bugs, redeem points, or ask him questions.
