One time I saw a post by someone saying they wanted their villager to call them by a specific name and that got me thinking, is that even possible? Also related- what happens when you tell a villager "no" to the nickname they come up for you (example: "Iron S," "highway," etc)? Will they be sad?

I absolutely hate some of the nicknames my villagers come up for me but I can never say no to them because I don't want to hurt their feelings 🥺

I've said no and they never ask me to come up with one. They say they'll have to come up with a better one. I said yes once and now everyone calls me shmoopy smh
interesting, I wonder if you have to be a certain level of friendship with them then?

They are a little bit sad but I've always been given the option to change it to something else.

Also they are sadder if they say "Hey I hear everyone's calling you kiddo, can I call you that too?" and you say no. I was trying to get Axel to move out but then I felt like a bad person for hurting his feelings.

?: It might depend on personality, but for the "Hey I hear everyone's calling you <x>" kind they are sad at first, but then seem to get happier when you give them a new nickname!

I think it varies. I've gotten the nicknames Tater Tot and Butterbean from two villagers but I was able to tell Zucker what to call me myself

Sometimes, if you don’t like their nickname, you have to provide an alternate, and there’s no way to leave the conversation til you do. However, you can either provide an existing nickname (to which they’ll ask if they can keep calling you that) or just your islander name

I like to let them call me whatever because it's funny. I went from headliner to rutabaga. All courtesy of Raymond.

They don't seem particularly sad when you decline them.

Half my town calls me butterbean - thanks, Norma! It's better than Sherb's suggestion of burrito. I hoped that in accepting butterbean as a nickname that he would start calling me it instead of burrito, but so far no good.
