Question about trading villagers

If I have ten villagers, but one is in boxes, can I still ask someone to move into my town or will it not work because I technically have ten?

Unfortunately, it won't work. The space needs to be available when you invite the next villager in.

it will not work but you can still get voided villagers if you give them away, so be careful.

Thank you for your answers. That's really good to know. Villagers showing up at my campsite was what was throwing me off.
