Question about trading villagers

So a few weeks ago, Gaston moved into my town. He told me he was from the town of YourButt (lol) and decided to move into mine.



I was actually selling turnips like 3 days before he moved in. I visited the town and another person that was there selling turnips was also from the town of YourButt. I have never met anyone else with that town name, not even on StreetPass.

So my question is, can you really take villagers when you're in a third party town? Does that mean if I'm planning on giving someone a villager, I shouldnt travel anywhere until the designated adopter has convinced that villager to move to their town?​

i traded a painting for kid cat but had no space so i put him in my sister's town. this week kid cat is part of my town and talked about some other town that wasn't my sister's. how many towns can these guys remember?

Yeah, this happened with my villager, Kitt, and from what I understand, it happens with voided villagers only.
I have never visited her owner's town but picked her up while I was visiting a friend's town while the owner was doing some trades there.
So far, I haven't had problems adopting villagers myself even though I do a fair number of trades. I usually try to adopt a villager the very next day after someone moves out to avoid the risk of getting voids.
