Question about the time played

So, I'm planning, if my mum lets me, to get a new ds, cause my current one is messed up. I then realised that I had been playing animal crossing a lot, which got me wondering: Does the game rely on activity log?

Basically what I mean is, if I got a new ds, which would obviously have a new, fresh activity log, would I go back to the tiny tree, and have to play another 500 hours? Or does the game tell the time played by itself?
I really don't want a tiny tree D:

If you bought the cartridge you have no problem and if you download it I think that when you transfer it to another 3ds everything will be transferred too.

Also, as I may get the acnl 3ds, is it safe to play 1 digital and 1 cartridge.

Yes, the digital is saved onto the SD card and the physical to the actual game card.
