Question about Cartoon Network

I would like to add one thing to the discussion: I think the three Powerpuff girls are somehow generic characters but a lot of people can relate to them and the girls are just nice. It?s one of those shows that is popular BECAUSE their characters are very generic, the stories are well written and entertaining, and the other side characters are very funny and I really liked the Powerpuff girls.

Yeah, that's true, but like I said, there are many classics, and a modern show tries to imitate a classic to be popular, that show is going to fail to reach its goal and probably fail. The Powerpuff girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and many other shows like that are classics, and they won't be forgotten, even in 100 years from now. The modern shows tend to fade to obscurity, even the better attempts like Adventure Time and Regular Show.

Yeah, that's true, but like I said, there are many classics, and a modern show tries to imitate a classic to be popular, that show is going to fail to reach its goal and probably fail. The Powerpuff girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and many other shows like that are classics, and they won't be forgotten, even in 100 years from now. The modern shows tend to fade to obscurity, even the better attempts like Adventure Time and Regular Show.

Yes the time period we live in is so fast and a lot of the stuff is quickly forgotten. I loved Dexter's Laboratory, so quirky and funny, it has always made me laugh!

Yea, pretty much agree. I didn't really think there was anything 'wrong' with Atomic Betty, it just wasn't really unique or interesting enough from anything else for me to specifically remember it (unless I see a thread about it years later on an obscure Animal Crossing forum).

Visually it was kind of unique in its character designs and stuff but on the other hand, it had that generic quality 'Newgrounds' flash animation look to it that almost every cartoon had a few years ago (it's a hard look to explain). It was really common and it was that 'look' everything seemed to have when animators first started using computers entirely for animation rather than hand drawn.
That really can't have helped in the 'generic' complaint, though to be fair, the was still more unique than a lot of other stuff at the time, even with the animation quality that I detest.

It was a bit random with things as well, I agree, but that seemed to be 'the thing' at the time, being random for the sake of being random in cartoons. Earthworm Jim was doing this years before with an evil goldfish and Queen-Pulsating-Repulsive-Slug-for-a-butt, and Cow and Chicken was pretty much based on random humor...By the time Atomic Betty came along, being random wasn't really random anymore.

Another cartoon that I remember from around the time that does the 'random humor' and 'Newgrounds animation' was 'Dave the Barbarian'. I don't think that did very well with views either (I kind of hated it), but it had largely the same problems all around (in my opinion).

Outside of the character traits, Powerpuff Girls was pretty unique at the time.

The only 'generic' thing would possibly be the humor since CN cartoons like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo or Cow and Chicken had kind of the same thing going on with their humor. They were all such unique concepts otherwise though which allowed for a lot of variety in the actual 'punchlines'.

Plus, that 'weird' humor CN had then wasn't really done that much beforehand. It was kind of CN's thing.

I only said that the girl`s character traits are generic. The show is unique.

I know it's weird to talk about this on a site centered on Animal Crossing, but I've been looking for the reason why the show got cancelled from CN for nine years. I could've asked on LBP Central (the largest Little Big Planet fansite), but I didn't think of it there. But yeah, Atomic Betty is so generic that it's easily forgettable. The worst part about the show in my current opinion is the fashion style used in the show. The main character's primary outfit is a short pink dress with biohazard belt and go-go boots. How does that match a galactic guardian's outfit? Also, her school outfit looks terrible. In fact, every student in the show didn't look good.

Atomic Betty is one of the many shows that is easily forgettable.

The truth here is that Atomic Betty isn't that unique at all, but it's more freaky and weird, like I repeatedly said about the show. When you bring up the computer animation, it's making all cartoons, not just Atomic Betty, less unique and more generic.

Yeah, it started to get more predictable. I have to admit, Total Drama Island is a lot better than the show in question. Yeah, it's Canadian too, but it's more entertaining. Notice how Total Drama is still running on American TV right now, and it came out in the US in 2008. Atomic Betty didn't even last a year in America.

Do you know what else was bad? Krypto the Superdog. And what else is there to say? Cartoon Network was at their worst from the years of 2004 to 2009. We had stuff like Atomic Betty, Totally Spies, Winx Club, Superdog, Gym Partner's, Squirrel Boy, Johnny Test, League of Super Evil, and many other shows like that. I think Chowder and Flapjack were the only shows worth watching. Shows like Camp Lazlo, Ben Ten, and Foster's are the other exceptions in that era. And Grim Adventures and Kids Next Door were there prior to 2004. I don't know what CN is like nowadays since I stopped watching it, but I still think that one long era I mention was the darkest days of CN.

I don't remember watching Krypto...I just remember thinking it was awful. I pretty much stopped watching Cartoon Network entirely around 2004.

Foster's was good though. I remember flicking through and wondering what it was and the 'Cheese' episode was on :3 Kind of a diamond in the rough though like the Disney channel with Gravity Falls.


I guess a lot of this could just be that they aren't made for me. As it's been said, a lot of negative reviews were from critics that tend to be grown adults who the shows aren't actually made for. I was around the age where kids generally stop watching cartoons when Atomic Betty came around, (and now I'm at the age where I like cartoons again).

On the other hand, I remember shows from late night Cartoon Network with Adult Swim that I really just didn't like and didn't get the point of like 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast' and 'Brak'. I kind of like them these days.

This is probably where I saw it. Wasn't it like one of the last few shows they had before they scrapped Saturday morning kids shows entirely?

Yeah I think so. Now it's just reruns of jungle run or random five minute cartoons
