Question about adopting villagers

Hi, due to a misunderstanding, I have a villager in boxes that someone wants in exchange for their villager. The only problem is, that villager of their is also in boxes. Can I adopt this villager right now, and can it replace the one currently in boxes for me, and vice versa? Thank you!

No, sorry. I think that you are stuck. In theory, this could work - but it doesn't. The plot needs to be empty before you can invite someone

agree with vixen! the game simply won't prompt you the required move-in dialogue without having an open plot ready to be filled on your island - evidenced by the fact that the name on the plot appears before you can return to your island.
(same thing with the islands, potential villagers need an open plot to appear, even in initial town development stage)
