they are redeemed in club Nintendo for prizes and such (in real life or games), I'm planning to get one because I want to get Pokemon

Pretty sure you can, unless Nintendo changed that.

As I doubt I'd of set mine up as being a family account initially. (though honestly, I've been on Club Nintendo since it was first introduced over here... like back when it and NSider used the same login info from what I remember)
