PSA for Traders/Host-ers about Wet Suits!!!

I came across this post on facebook. Thought it was a very good thing to share here for people to keep in mind when they have others over to their island

⚠⚠⚠⚠ DIVING UPDATE IMPORTANT ADMIN PSA
PLEASE READ, TAG FRIENDS, AND SHARE!⚠⚠⚠⚠⚠

As you all probably know by now, Nintendo has launched the v.1.3.0 Summer Update (Wave 1) which unlocks the ability to dive into the ocean and search for sea creatures. (Please refer to our Announcements tab at the top of the group for any information and FAQ regarding the update.)

⚠ What you MAY not know is that this feature is accessible to ANY visitor on your island so as long as they have a wetsuit on hand. While this is great for friends, this could also open an opportunity for visitors to gain access to restricted parts of your island for trading or any events you might be hosting.

⚠ ANY visitor can JUMP from your AIRPORT DOCK and potentially swim around any fencing or restricted areas you may have placed down for trading or hosting events. ANYONE has the ability to swim on islands meaning "best friend" approval is NOT required as it is for shovel and axe access.

⚠ You CAN'T use the wetsuit as a wand outfit but you CAN wear it as a base outfit and hide it using a wand outfit which means it IS POSSIBLE to conceal the fact that visitors are wearing it.

TIPS TO HELP IF YOU HAVE A THIEF OR UNWANTED VISITOR ON YOUR ISLAND

POWER DOWN YOUR SWITCH. If someone is stealing from you shut power off ASAP. This interrupts the connection and causes them to disconnect and leave without the stuff in their inventory. Both players inventories will be reset and you will only have what you started with before the visit. This also prevents trade scams as well.

HOLD DOWN THE SCREEN SHOT BUTTON. This records the last 30 seconds of gameplay if you are trying to record someone stealing. Always take screenshots and get as much proof as you can so we can help keep thieves out of our group.

TURN YOUR SWITCH INTO AIRPLANE MODE. This also cuts the connection and will remove everyone from the game without saving. An alternative to powering down your switch. You can do this by holding down the home button and turning on airplane mode.

We highly recommend NOT posting your dodo code publicly. Of course, we do have the Friend & Dodo Code Unit to connect with players but this allows anyone to be able to come into your island and do whatever they want. Try to keep it to DMs. It’s safer and easier to track who your island visitors are.



We want everyone to have a fun and safe experience with the wonderful multiplayer options New Horizons has to offer. Remember to report thievery/shady visits by reaching our team at the LINK REMOVED page! Try and get as much proof as you can with screenshots or a screen recording. Thievery will not be tolerated here! If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below and one of our modmins will get back to you.

Please be careful and monitor who you let into your island to avoid potential theft and destruction of your property. Please feel free to copy and paste this information into other groups and tag your friends and family in the comments for awareness!

Some additions to help those who are discussing

You can fence your beach/shoreline!
--- You cannot get back onto the island from the ocean on Docks, Rocks, or Grass (peninsula)
--- Time consuming, so personally I do not recommend.
------- Better to fence off your valuables than this, really.

You cannot have the wet suit under the wand outfit then just jump in
--- You have to change out of the wand outfit first
--- This is why it is good to keep an eye on guests when you can

--- This PSA isn't for you because you clearly don't do mass hosting...
------- Just because it isn't necessary for you doesn't mean it isn't for a large % of traders/host-ers.
--- Turnips & DIYs cannot be stored in storage. Pockets & homes only have so much space so a lot of people just leave them out on their islands
------- Also some people will put out item(s) for SO/alt characters to pick up when they play as a little surprise since you can only send mail twice a day to them... A lot of people do share and can't play at the same time together.
--- Unless you do 1 person at a time while doing Meteor Shower Hosting, Celeste Visit, Turnip Spikes, or Villager Crafting it is impossible to keep track of EVERYONE on the island at the exact same time.
-------- Several people just fenced off the way to the needed places, which made it streamlined and more security. Now that will be more difficult.
--------- Not everyone has these things at the VERY front of their island so they have to have people travel by the docks or beaches. This will help keep them informed.

"Nintendo should make it like axe/shovel where only best friends can..."
--- I'm sorry, but I really do not foresee Nintendo doing this because it is not a "destructive" tool like the axe and shovel is. It is best we think of some ideas now. =/


RECOMMENDATIONS
--- Guest shows up wearing a wet suit? Disconnect immediately
--- Wait by the airport to greet them/Follow them to airport when they leave when possible
--- Fence off/clean up your valuables if you are doing a more than 1 person visit. (DIYs, turnips, money trees, gifts, etc.)
--- If someone seems to be "missing" that is visiting, best to just disconnect to be safe if you don't know them/they will not respond.
--- Don't let this worry you into not wanting to trading or hosting!
--- I always recommend just doing trades/hostings on trustworthy platforms that have public rating systems (like here on TBT =3)

Might be a good thing to do if you're worried. I've noticed that while entering the water is less restrictive, you can only get out of the water on the shoreline. If you put fences along the shoreline, then you'd be blocking areas.

It's too bad that this is a thing though. Maybe Nintendo should've let the host choose whether to allow swimming or not when opening gates.

This is good and helpful for others especially the giveaway people.

However, since people find swimming slow, I mean.. you're gonna watch them geronimo off the docks and sail off like a cargo ship. Nice getaway grandma!

If you wanna be cautious, you could block off beaches with furniture and then they'll really be trapped. Even better use all the sea grapes/cucumbers as blockades and tell them that's their spirit animal.

blocking the beach shores is a good idea!
Perhaps people can make a rule on their island for visitors. Visitors aren't allowed to visit islands wearing a wetsuit and if they do/are caught putting one on, then the host should shut the game down!

I offered access on the turnip exchange for a bit today and it didn't occur to me until then that they could even do that. Thankfully everyone was great! It's scary, though, and makes me afraid to open my town to people outside this forum!

TIL you can put a wand outfit on over your wetsuit. At least you can't jump in the water with the wand outfit on. So if they pull the wand out while near your airport that's a warning flag and easy to spot

Guess my new practice will be to stand right next to the airport entrance now, instead of at the island entrance?

Just tried it, no unfortunately. You still have to be visibly wearing the wetsuit to swim. But that makes it a little easier to catch thieves because if they come in with a wand outfit on, they still have to get it out and change out of the outfit before they can jump

well that definitely complicates things. maybe have a no wet suit rule for trading and if you see them change into it know to dc right away

They might update that later based on feedback though? I mean the same way only best friends can use a shovel on your island, adjust the code to do the same for wetsuits?

I didn't even think about this. I have most of my stuff fenced in on land but I probably have some other stuff laying around and forgot about. Too bad they will be moving away very slowly and I can power off in time.
