PSA: Don't let villagers buy things from you!

I've always known this and never give them anything I don't want them to display.

I never deliver gifts, or give them bugs or fish.

You'll end up with Teddy in a bath wrap with sea bass decor - for life. >..<

The problem is I take one look at their cute little faces and say yes no matter what. Audie gifted Sherb a cafe uniform that looked absolutely terrible on him, and I told him so. Then he was like "Aww, really?" and I told him to keep it on 🙃

Ok so here’s a picture of the sea bass I sold to Marshal. I think it looks really good and suits the theme of his house really well.

I absolutely feel this, early in the game I once let Stella buy a common butterfly, a yellow butterfly and a yellow perch from me. She displayed them all in her house and it made it so so ugly. I wish we could complain about this to Isabelle or at least could be invited over and buy them back from them like in New Leaf but alas

This happened to me with Marshal and a wasp. I was quite tired while playing and didn't even think about it. Now he's had that awful wasp in his house since week one of ACNH. :(

A potential, though perhaps temporary, solution is to gift them an item that will look better either in their house or on them.

For clothing, gift them something that suits them, their theme, and their personality and if they like it enough, they will wear it more often than something else.

I have Rowan and someone gifted him this weird costume that looked terrible. I saw him wear it for a day, but after that, he went back to wearing the jock clothes I've gave him and I haven't seen it again since.

I have a player 2 and recently when he spoke with Rowan, Rowan commented on the first track jacket I had given him (it was what he was wearing) and that I had great taste.

For housing items, follow the same gifting scheme and where it might not guarantee them removing the eyesore item, it's likely they will replace it if they like it better.

Fuchsia asked me for a sea bass as well and where I've seen it a handful of times, I've more often seen items that better suit her theme and personality.

I like to remind myself to choose carefully what I give my villagers. Which is also the reason as to why my friendship levels aren't that far up yet, ugh... My significant other gifted olive a butterfly fish a while ago and it looks as if it's always been part of her interior decoration. Some things make for great additions to their houses, others... Well, not so much. 😅

I don't really mind what they display in their house. However, Marshal asked me about wharf roaches two days in a row last week and I shot his requests down real quick. I would have caught him just about any other bug

Might be an unpopular opinion but I don't mind giving my villagers gifts and having them rotate their furniture, I think it's kind of cute and for me at least, helps me differentiate my villager against others who may share villagers with me!

Also, I think it's weird if we had more control over our villager's houses  at that point, your villager's are just 'accessories' and i'd rather have villagers be more like residents if that makes sense! *though I do understand the important of aesthetics!! It's a reason why I gift villagers certain furniture or clothes haha

Ever since learning that Antonio will never upgrade his house beyond "empty white wooden box" I've just given up. I like being friends with my villagers. They can buy my bugs and fish and I will just laugh at how weird their houses look later. At least they're happy, I guess?
