i accidentally let myself get down to 8 villagers. i really don't want a random move-in right now, especially when i'm getting so close to having all my dreamies. today is the day they would move in, is there any way i could change the date so they don't move in? i was thinking change the date on my ds? camofrog moved out yesterday (9th villager), will the new one be coming the next day (today) anyways?

preventing a random move-in?

Changing the date won't do anything because you would still have 8 villagers, and the game is going to have a random move in, regardless.
Typically the next day after a villager moves in, you won't have a random move it. It's highly likely tomorrow you will though. In my town, Kyle just moved out yesterday, and I'm down to 8 villagers too, I didn't have a random move in today.
My only guess is to get a dreamie today, so they take the place of a random villager? That's the only thing I can think of :| Otherwise, just plot reset so the random doesn't move into a terrible spot.

You basically have two options:
1) keep the date the same. Ensure you're date hasn't changed before loading up the game. Stay on that day until you receive your dreamie.
2) load up the game with a new character and look for a plot. If ou don't have one, make a house with the new char and save. You can now safely play through the day. Bear in mind though that the 7th day after having 8 villagers is a 100% move in rate if my sources are correct, so don't go too far if you plan to do this.
I think the easier option is to stay on that day, but if you wanna play a few days for your game because you're bored or really want to play, you should be okay for a day or two so long as you use a scout first.
