Pond fish found in my rivers?

I just fished a catfish (pond fish) from my river.. I'm confused lol. Can a body of water count as two things? Or can a pond fish also spawn in a river and vice versa? And I know it isn't counted as a pond because I've been fishing river fish in it.

Most river fish can spawn on ponds, but the opposite isn't true. There's fish that specifically spawn only in ponds, so they won't be seen in rivers. Catfish are very common in ponds.

I managed to catch my stringfish on the last day in March, in a small enclosed body of water that usually spawns pond fish

is the water connected to an upper level at all? even if it's just from waterfall from nowhere at the edge of the cliff. that tends to categorize it as a river instead of a pond.

I'm guessing terrforming makes it harder for the game to determine the correct spawn points?

To clarify, it is connected to a 2 level waterfall and then connects to the ocean. It isn't a very long river however? It has spawned pretty much every single river fish, such as snapping turtle, black bass, guppy, neon tetra, pale chub, freshwater goby, and the only pond fish it has spawned is a catfish. So it can't be true that "Most river fish can spawn on ponds, but the opposite isn't true." Because the catfish definitely spawned in my "river" and not the other way around.. But yeah, I have found river fish in ponds, but never the opposite, until now so I'm just really confused. I want to make sure every fish/bug is catchable with the way I'm terraforming, so I really wanna figure this out. Right now, I have made a makeshift pond which was spawning killifish and tadpoles, but it isn't a permanent pond. I really wish there was an definite answer somewhere out there before I put too much effort into terraforming only to learn later that I messed up XD

I fished a koi out of my river the other morning. Only time I've had an anomalous catch like that. River hasn't changed since it was drawn up when my island was created, and it is a sea-level river. Weird.
