Pokemon Trading Cards!

PokemonTCGOnline, check it out if you're interested in playing. They give you a few pretty basic decks to start out with, going through computer opponents.
You can battle with other people, trade cards etc. It is still in beta form and it's clear to see that. Battling strangers might not a good idea, not without thinking about the deck you're using.

Buying real cards do give you codes for it that unlock theme decks. Booster packs do aswell, but you don't get the same cards. It's like opening another pack is all.

The TCGO hopefully, eventually will be really fun and stable.
It's fun right now when it works. They've started up a thing where you get rewards for logging in for so many days. But yeah, like Andy said, you can buy real booster packs and theme decks and they have a card on the inside with a code on it that you redeem in the game.

You can get lucky with those too, mind you. I bought a booster pack a few months ago and it had complete crap in it. Went and redeemed it on TCGO and got an EX Mew card along with some decent other ones.

I love playing, I have about 400 or so cards, but I haven't bought since B/W. I have nobody to play with.

I have all of the original 150 with the boosts and potions and whatnot. I have a couple limited edition ones in that mix as well.

I used to have a ton but I don't have anyone to play with anymore and cards have gotten lost in all the moves I have done.

It's fun to play though!!!
