Is this a legitimate spot for placement?

I'm not certain since I've never tried that exact layout before, but since the houses are not directly above/below each other, I believe it might work. Normally, you would need at least 3 spaces vertically between the houses, but with one being off to the side I don't think that should be necessary.

You need one more space in between the house in front. Including the line indicating the door, the house needs 2 space buffer (I just checked by seeing how close a PWP can be placed in front of a house door). The sides of the house also needs a 2 space buffer. Essentially when plotting, the buffer zone around the house (which can't be overlapped) looks like this for each house:

XXXXX
XOOOX
XOOOX
XOOOX
XXOXX
XXXXX

Ah, that makes sense! Someone moved on top of my orchard :( and I’m very confused. There goes my apples -sigh-

You need at least three spaces.

That is (using X for a house and O for in-between space):

For animal villagers:

XXXOOXXXOOXXX
XXXOOXXXOOXXX
XXXOOXXXOOXXX

For humans:

XXXXXOOXXXXXOOXXXXX
XXXXXOOXXXXXOOXXXXX
XXXXXOOXXXXXOOXXXXX

I actually recommend three Os so you can have trees or bushes in between houses.

For animal villagers:

XXXOOOXXXOOOXXX
XXXOOOXXXOOOXXX
XXXOOOXXXOOOXXX

For humans:

XXXXXOOOXXXXXOOOXXXXX
XXXXXOOOXXXXXOOOXXXXX
XXXXXOOOXXXXXOOOXXXXX
