My question is do I have to have my AC game open and running to get them or can I be on the main screen with the game in my unit?

AC is always in my unit and I have tired going out with my ds in sleep mode on the main screen and with AC booted up and running but in sleep mode...does only one work or both? Or maybe I am totally confused. I have gotten the 3 from Nintendo (those are spot passes though right?) and 3 random ones but don't remember if I had my game running or not and wanted to be sure so that when I go out I have it set up properly to get the street passes.

I know it is probably a stupid question so please be nice.

I feel like I streetpass more easily if my DS is on the home screen in sleep mode, but you can streetpass while playing. I wouldn't leave the game running in sleep mode, if something happened to your power or anything you'd end up with trouble in your game.

You don't have to have ACNL in to streetpass, it uses your save data. Every game you play that can streetpass will streetpass at the same time.

Your main game does not have to be in your 3ds. As long as you have the wireless switch on, and you walk by someone else with their wireless switch on, you can streetpass, provided that you both have played the same game. Your 3ds will automatically swap data with another player about 30m away (or so I've heard). A little green dot will show up on the lower righthand corner of your game's icon if you streetpass! In ACNL you can fill you HHA Showcase with a bunch of homes.

I always save before putting my game in sleep mode just in case so I am good there but THANK YOU both so much for letting me know...now I won't bother to start the game up next time...I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right!

The guys at GameStop told me how to Street Pass.

1. Your ACNL game has to be in your 3DS.
2. 3DS has to be turned on
3. Sleep mode preferred
4. Wireless Internet has to be turned on.

They told me the 3DS communicates with another 3DS with the internet switch on.

Also make sure your lamp, lights and music are turned on in your house before you save your game and put it into sleep mode.

A game programmer told me all of your game play is saved on the actually game card not he SD card in your 3DS.

I have street passed over 25 homes.

The mall, game stores, Best Buy and movie theater have been very popular for sp.

You want to put yourself in a target rich enviroment.

I read amusement parks are also very popular.

If you are young enough to be in school -- that would be a great place to get sp.

I got sp at O'Charley's a couple of weeks ago. I happen to go when some older teenagers were having a birthday party.

none of this helps me. i barely leave my house =(

interesting thanks for sharing the tips...I wish I could street pass the same people to get their house upgrades...their houses would upgrade right to the current model? I know the one they got from me was a lot different than it is now!

That's not true, all street pass enabled games will create a street pass data file on the system's SD card when street pass for the game it turned on. The system will then use this file to swap data with other systems that also have a street pass data file for the same game. Since all street pass data is stored on the SD card there is no need to to have the game in the system. Heck you can leave all your games at home and tag some one and come home to find not only Animal Crossing data but you could find other things like Mario Kart 7 ghost data, Mii data, and more all from a single tag. All you have to do is make sure that street pass for the game and the wireless switch is turned on. You can get tagged at any time whether your'e playing a game at the mall or sitting on the toilet.

Well there's a reason why it's called street pass instead of house pass...
