Plaza buffer help!!

I started a second town and i was curious as to how close villagers can put there houses up against the plaza? Ive noticed it's conciderably closer compared to projects. I want to try and ring my plaza with villagers, how possible would that be/how much space would i need?

i'm pretty sure the edge of the plaza is treated the same as a cliff or the river, meaning they would need to be 1 space away on the sides and at the back, and 2 spaces away in front of the house for door space. hope this helps. and this idea is really cool too.
