We want her to attack intruders so its not really a bad thing and also most dogs don't like little kids they shout and run around to much so you can't really blame the dog, little dogs do the same thing except pitbulls are more inclined to be attack dogs so yeah. If a little kid lived with us it'd be fine. She doesn't see them very much either its only when we have to bring her when we go to my grandparents. I don't think dogs know little kids are younger they just think they are smaller. A dog shouldn't like someone it never sees that kicked one of its owners in the face. It was ok with them before that, wouldn't leave it alone with them obviously but it didn't try to bite before.
We had a dog like that, one of our Alaskan Malamutes.
Big, loveable ball of fluff to the family members. He went everywhere with me when I was little; he used to watch Teletubbies with me, lolol.
But if anybody unfamiliar came over, both of our dogs had to go outside. Very territorial, and very protective of us. And big, very big. This dog could stand on his hind legs and look my father in the eyes.. at 10 months old. My dad is 6'2.
Even when my sisters moved out, we had to put them outside when THEY came over. They weren't around often enough to still be considered 'family' - they 'left the pack.'
They actually had to spend a lot of time outside for the first few years, but we had a huge yard and a wrap-around fence that went from our solarium to our basement, both of which we kept open for them. They had a comfortable space.
So no, I do agree - unfamiliar people can raise red flags for any protective family dog. Doesn't mean they're not well-trained, just means you have to take some extra precautions with some dogs. I mean, depending on the kind of neighborhood you live in, you might prefer a dog you have to 'lock up' for a little bit when certain friends/family come over to a dog that won't so much as bark at the guy breaking into your house in the middle of the night.
