So Pietro asked to come over to my house today to look at my decorations. There's only two pieces of furniture inside right now because I'm remodeling but I said he could so we headed over and after telling me how very grown up and artistic I was for having barely anything at all in my home I figured he'd leave. I mean, we're just standing in an empty room awkwardly staring at each other, right? Wouldn't you leave in that situation? Apparently not. He asked to see the rest of my rooms as I had recently gotten the upstairs room. It's tiny and there's nothing in it so I didn't take him up the stairs. There's absolutely nothing to see their either and we might as well stand in a closet together because that's how big that room is anyway. I guess he didn't believe me or something because he proceeded to stand there for thirteen hours until I finally took him upstairs.

For the love of goodness!

i hate when that happens lol. i read somewhere that it can help to talk to them every time you go into a new room, or to go through each room twice and talk to them every time. it's not always guaranteed to get them to leave, but i've had a little bit of luck with it. most of the time i just give up and kick them out by leaving myself D: maybe if we could actually do stuff with them inside the houses it'd be less annoying, but i just find it almost pointless to have villagers over most of the time.

To make them leave you have to take them to every room in the house and talk to them. When they reach the last room they will leave after a few minutes

Yeah that happened to me, all my rooms accept main room and upstairs were blocked off but I didn't realise that you have to take them to every part so the villager stood there for a week while I was on holiday.

If a villager asks to see your house the game is programmed for them to go to every room, however small or empty.
So take them to every room and then they should leave (sometimes its in the last room seen, sometimes I have to take them back to the main room). Keep talking to them.

If they knock & enter uninvited they only stay in the main room, you don't have to show them the others.

I have on occasion had one room blocked by furniture, they don't like that much and I think the letter they send you afterwards (with gift) mentions the blocked room.

If you are having problems getting them to leave go as if to leave your house and they will also leave (apparently works in acnl, I've not had to try it, certainly did work in earlier games).

A silly subjective aside: I have a musical instrument in the main room (one of the guitars as I play using feng shui) -if I start playing (after they have visited every room but show no signs of leaving) - I start playing the guitar - they leave very quickly - always makes me laugh!

Failproof method to get them to take the hint to scram, sit down in one of your chairs. They will be gone within ten to twenty seconds. And I wish Pietro would move in with me...

Normally, I just leave my house after a few seconds. The villager will leave with you, so no harm done. :)

Yeah, I just leave the house and come back in. Aint nobody got time for that.

I always take them around to each room, talking to them once in each room, and then when we go back to the main room they stand there for a minute or two and then leave. Almost always, each visit only lasts 4 minutes.
Once, I took them through this route, and they didn't leave, so I had to exit... Either got glitched or I just totally forgot to show them one room.
