How exactly does this work?

I have 9 villagers and recently went to my friends town, who has 10 but Gladys was voided from her town.
Will I get Gladys for sure, or is it only a chance?

Also, do they have to visit MY town for me to get a voided villager from them, or do I visit their town to get it?
The whole concept of voided villagers confuses me in general, since everyone seems to have different things to say.

Basically I want to know if I'll get Gladys or not. I TT'd ahead one day and got ready to plot reset for Gladys if I do get her, but I don't see a plot anywhere. Is there a chance I'll still get her or not?

There's a chance you won't get her, but you might. Normally the person who has the voided villager has to come to your town.

So it's unlikely I'll get the villager from her? I just would hate to have to start up my game like I'm plot resetting daily just to find the villager isn't here.

I've done a lot of traveling and have had a lot of people come to my town, and I've never had a voided villager move in when I have 9 villagers. I think you can only get the 10th villager if you explicitly invite him / her from the campsite or another person's town.

I've had my 10th villager move in from a void before.

I'm just not sure of the percentage... Sorry!

That's okay! My main concern is that there are too many places I don't want a new villager to move to. I think I'll try and adopt someone so I will at least know that I'll be getting someone tomorrow for sure.

I just got two voids from street pass in the past two weeks... both were my tenth (got one, another villager moved out, got the second one).

I have.

I picked up Simon last year from a void. I had nine villagers at the time. This was before I was able to get Stitches. I wasn't happy about it. And after it happened, and while I did like Simon in general, I stepped up my effort to move out another Lazy, Clyde, in order to get Stitches. I eventually was able to get out Simon as well. (This happened in my first town, Applewin.)

The last void I picked up (in October 2014), also at a time when my town Applewin had nine villagers, was Sprinkle. That was my screw-up: having my Mayor Jill visit my other town, Temps, as Sprinkle was gone from there. She left Temps without being in boxes. (I loaded up the game one day and Temps Mayor Alicia received Sprinkle's good-bye letter in the mail.) I had something going between the two towns and had Applewin's Jill visit Temps's Alicia. The next game date, without thinking of having unintentionally picked up a void, is when Applewin's Jill had discovered Sprinkle's plot in a disruptive location. It took me between two and three actual months to get her out. (I have a new town, Foster, specifically for Sprinkle. I adore her!)

To reiterate: A player can indeed pick up a voided villager at a time in which that player doesn't have all ten of his/her town's villager slots filled. Please be mindful…and careful!

Nope... I didn't even know Kabuki existed until one day I started my game and saw a 10th villager was moving in. I actually like him now, so I got very lucky. I was bummed at the time, though, because I had planned on keeping the 10th spot open in case Maple were to ever show up in my campsite. I guess it was just meant to be. Now I keep hoping I won't see her! LOL. (At least until someone moves out, of course.)

I have had a tenth villager move in repeatedly from either streetpass, visiting a player's town and/or the player visiting me. There is no guarantee it will happen but the only safe method is to get a tenth villager or put your town on lockdown .. No visits/trading or streetpass

The whole void thing is all about chance. You might get the voided villager- or you might not.
Doesn't matter whether you visit or invite- as long as you interact with other towns the voided villager may move in. (And streetpass as well)
If you're really concerned about picking up someone from the void you might ask the other person to visit a full town before s/he visits yours (or before you visit his/her town). Visiting a full town like 3 times or so would probably clear the void (although not guaranteed..as I said, the whole void thing depends on chance.)

I went to my mom's town last week and I picked up Croque from her void. Normally I'd be very annoyed by this, but Croque ended up putting his house in a really good spot! My mom knows nothing about voids, so someday I'll have to teach her about clearing hers.
