If you own a physical copy of the game all of your progress is saved on the cartridge not in your 3DS.

Over the last few weeks I have read a few posts about saving the game on the 3DS.

A game programmer told me your progress is saved to your cartridge.

If you own the digital version then the game is saved to your 3DS.

Thanks for clearing this up for everyone. It got annoying with people asking about this everywhere and whatnot :)

I can attest to this. I just got a new 3DS XL yesterday and popped my game cartridge out of the old one and put it in the new one. Everything, including my HHA houses were right there (SpotPass and StreetPass). I couldn't have been happier.

I see in your profile you are in Tennessee.

I am thinking about having a real ACNL party.

I am in Knoxville.

Are you close?

I am a 45 year old happily married lady. Stay at home mom to 3 dogs.

I though it would be awesome to throw a themed ACNL party.

If you come you have to bring furniture and a piece of fruit.

You also have to come dressed as your character or a villager.

I am working on the menu.

Peach Tart- cherry cobbler-- orange sherbet
Entree will probably be shrimp. I would love to serve crab but it is very very expensive.

Via 3rd party external hardware you can back up your games save file onto your computer. This way if your cartridge ever goes kaput you can get a new one and upload the date tot he new cartridge. :3

You can put your game's file on your computer? I'm assuming you're talking about physical copy?
Oh, I realize you're talking about 3rd party hardware lol.
Too bad people can't back up NL digital data on their computer... It's a shame New Leaf didn't even come with the backup feature Nintendo made =3=

Actually, if it's digital, I think you have the choice of saving it either to your 3DS or an external memory card. If you save to a memory card, you can hook that baby up to your computer and rummage through all its save data. There was a tutorial on GameFAQs on how to make backups with this technique, but I can't remember it or where it was. You had to do some editing to some of the files Animal Crossing made.

Yes, your cartridge save file can be put onto your computer.

For those with the digital:

Basically just save it to the sd card and upload that way. The advantage of digital, however, I still prefer cartridge.

Games for Nintendo handhelds have always been saved on cartridges since the GameBoy, so I'm not surprised.

I'm in Sparta, so about two hours out...there are three players in my household, each with their own town.
