So, a little bit later, I am going to drop some stuff off at someone's town to hold while I switch to a Switch Lite console and make it my primary one. I want to continue collecting eggs and things and was wondering if I could go ahead and start an island on the Lite with my physical copy of AC. Would putting the cart I used with my original Switch erase my first island and replace it if I put it in my Switch Lite? And when it is time to pick up my items being held, would I use my character on the Lite to do so?

I might be misunderstanding you, but right now your game is tied to one console and one console only. If you're switching to a Lite, you'll have to start your game over completely.

I wish Nintendo didn’t do it that way 😭 its awful

You would have to start over on your Switch Lite, but because the island is tied to the system, you will always be able to return to the island on your original Switch, should you so choose.

Your island is saved on your console and currently can't be transferred or backed up. There is no save-data on your physical cartridge, so you would have to start over, but should be able to return to your old island unless you wipe the save-data from your old Switch.

Is there any idea as to why Nintendo is doing it this way? I hope it changes in the future

The main reason is to prevent abuse -- to stop duplication, etc. Granted you know how that went, but they fixed it. But still.

Nintendo has stated they intend to prevent people from "cheating" by somehow abusing save backups. Probably an attempt to stop people from hex-editing their towns like with CF/LGTC and NL or to stop you from cloning by dumping things in a friend's town then restoring a backup. Sadly, I don't think they're going to change it. They've said they plan to allow ONE save a backup in extreme cases like theft or destruction of your Switch sometime in the future but they've been pretty vague about conditions, how many times you can do it and when.

Yeah that’s unfortunate. People are going to lose their games if their switch got broken or whatever other situation...

I'm not sure which part you specifically mean. No Switch game saves to the cartridge, they aren't designed for that.
Considering NH saves are console wide and not separated by profile the usual methods every other game can use won't work for transfer and cloud backup, but Nintendo already said that there are solutions coming for both later this year.

Yes, that is probably another reason, even though it was clear months ago duping/save editing would be an issue considering the sheer amount of easily hackable Switches.

A failed attempt that is, as it appears. Nintendo also quickly removed the statement from the Direct that said "only one backup" and even reuploaded it, so we have to see if the limitation will actually be implemented. Let's hope it will be something more along the lines of once a month or something like that.

I really hope they change this because I ONLY got a switch lite since all the switch consoles lite or not are selling out like crazy in my area and that was the only one I could get my hands on...
I want to be able to upgrade eventually knowing I can move my island rather than start all over

Hello I just wanted to drop in and say that eventually the devs do plan to allow a one time system transfer in the future! I plan on doing mine when I upgrade my switch as soon as the option is available.
